Where other smartphone brands are hooking customers into their ecosystems, there is a brand that is constantly tapping some of the unique tech areas. HMD announced “The Better Phone Project” in 2024 to “tackle the impact of smartphone use on the well-being of children and young people around the world.” And, considering that project, they have released HMD X1, a smartphone built after a partnership with Xplora .

This smartphone goes on the OS level and integrates some key elements that parents can use to monitor the usage of their kids. Although the phone is still in development, the idea is literally great.

The X1 is able to become the best phone for kids because it features customizable app and internet access that allows the parents to limit the social media, screen time, and browsing on the phones. Not only that, the phone also features location tracking with safe zones, emergency calling, alerts for low battery and remote access for parents. During the school hours, parents can minimize the distractions where they can lock specific apps and features as per their needs. And all these settings are managed by parents remotely from the Xplora app.

But don’t think that if this smartphone is for kids, it won’t have those good features. The X1 features a 108 MP camera and a 5000 mAh battery. It also has IP 54 splash resistance and also includes the 3.5 mm headphone jack. The phone will be customizable with accessories like a handheld console or the ring light around the camera module, giving a great way for the kids to customize their phones as per their requirements.

After the focus of HMD’s on self repairable devices, this project is also packs unique work and it will be interesting to see how this phone for kids will come out as an overall package.
